Apprentice Dental Nurse

Assist the dentists during all clinical procedures in the surgery which will include fillings, root canal treatment, bridge crown and denture preparation, extractions, and assessments. Assist the hygiene Therapists with scale and polish and oral health promotion plus charting and periodontal assessments. Disposing of all waste correctly, including clinical, sharps, specialist, amalgam, and normal domestic. Assisting with the preparation of the patient and equipment during the taking of x-rays and processing and storing all images. Record and store notes, charting, medical history and radiographs on computerized systems. Reception duties which include answering the telephone greeting patients, making appointments and recording them correctly on the system. Filing, typing and using computer software. Set up and prepare the surgery for the type of patient and treatment planned before the start of each session. Clean and sterilise all instruments/equipment and working surfaces to the required standards at the end of each session. Escort patients from the waiting room to the surgery, confirming the medical history is up-to-date and warning the dentist of any problems that he/she has noted.

Training:
The apprentice will be working towards the Level 3 Dental Nurse Apprenticeship Standard for a duration of 24 months, which includes the City & Guilds Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dental Nursing. College attendance will be at the Colchester Institute (Colchester Campus) one day per week during term time. During the course, all students are observed regularly in the workplace, undertaking clinical duties and ensuring they are following safe working practice.

Training Outcome:
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will gain a Licence to Practice qualification that will allow you to register with the General Dental Council and you can apply for registered/qualified positions. There may be opportunities for you to study further and apply for other positions within the dental industry. The practice can help support progression to dental hygienist and dental therapist.

Working Hours :
Monday 10am - 7:30 pm, Tuesday 7:45am - 5pm, Wednesday 8am - 3pm, Thursday study day, Friday 7:45am - 2pm. Occasional Saturdays 8am - 2pm.
