The role is part of the R&D department at Luxfer MEL Technologies’ (LMT) Manchester site. The zirconium chemicals business at LMT develop materials that go into catalyst and healthcare applications. The magnesium business within LMT design, develop and manufacture novel magnesium alloys used in a range of applications from aerospace to oil and gas.
As an R&D Apprentice you will be predominantly based in the Zirconium R&D team, where you will be involved in developing future zirconium advanced materials. You may also complete placements in other departments such as Quality Assurance and Manufacturing, which will be done in six monthly blocks.
Alongside your studies, you’ll be working as part of the Zirconium Research and Development Team where you will:
Learn to conduct experimental work, initially based on set protocols, and then learning to design your own synthesis and scale up experiments
Learn to characterise the materials you produce using traditional chemistry techniques and a wide variety of analytical instrumentation (for example XRF, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IC, Particle Size, Surface Area and Porosity instruments)
Learn to interpret the results you generate and learning to present the data you produce

Apprentices work full-time whilst studying towards a BSc (Hons) Scientist (Chemical Science) degree from Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as a Level 6 degree apprenticeship
Students study a tutor-supported e-distance learning curriculum and attend residential schools. The work-based projects, negotiated with employers, offer students the opportunity to apply their learning directly to their organisation
The programme is primarily taught through tutor-supported online study, part-time over four years.
Apprentices will attend a two-day induction at the University to help them get to know each other and balance undergraduate study with working full-time. They will also attend a week-long residential at our campus in central Manchester once a year, in addition to a two day mini-residential in the first year

The apprentice will be paired with an engineer every day and will be expected to assist in carrying out tasks such as:

Fault finding.
Repairs or replaces drives, transformers, motors and hydraulic and gas electrical controls.

Our apprentices are expected:
To understand safe practices of working and always work in accordance with Dalkia’s health and safety policies.
To act professional at all times, including when on customer premises.
Attend site visits and inspections, support with getting the sites ready for inspections and working with the Health and Safety team to ensure site documentation is up to date.
Ensure our client’s equipment complies with current safety documentation and legislation.
Take part in all apprentice activities planned by the company (e.g. annual apprentice event).

Training:

How you’ll make a difference
Our StreetCare Design and Operations team play a key role in the delivery of quality highways related maintenance and construction works. They’re commencing an ambitious programme to deliver over £100m worth of investment through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS) programme.
As a Groundworker Apprentice, you will join our frontline team, supporting them by contributing to the highways work throughout the delivery phase. Your role is vital in keeping our roads safe and meeting the needs of the South Gloucestershire community.
Groundworkers are the first trade onto a construction and civil engineering site. They work closely with supervisors and engineers in interpreting design specifications and will prepare the site ready for the structural building works to take place.
Your duties will include:
Working alongside our experienced staff, you will support and contribute towards the physical construction of a wide variety of features including, site clearance, fencing, drainage, earthworks, pavements, kerbing, footways, block paving, traffic signs, road markings and retaining walls
You will have the opportunity to learn how to operate small mechanical plant and machinery used in the maintenance of highways and the safety methods involved around operation of plant and equipment
You will be taught how to undertake general manual labouring work, assisting in excavations, reinstatements and specialist practices such as asphalt mixes, landscaping, structures and temporary traffic management
You will be responsible for your own safety on site as well as your fellow workers and the public, this will be done by adhering to directed safe methods of work at all times
You’ll be completing a Level 2 Groundworker apprenticeship which will provide you with a highly transferable set of knowledge and skills, which you gain by working for us. These are the units you’ll get to learn;
Health and safety
Accessing and interpreting drawings and specifications
Using and maintaining power tools and equipment
Gauging and mixing mortars and concrete by hand and by mixer
Installing and testing basic drainage and ducting

Prospecting - generate a tout list obtained by tracking properties that have been on the market with other agents for a period and not sold. Generate tout list by obtaining addresses of the tracked properties, and send letters periodically to the property owners to gain their instruction
Prospecting - by dropping door to door leaflets in specific areas, in roads where we have recently sold, and also to properties that have been on the market with other agents, or withdrawn from the market
Various administrative tasks to support the sales team, including printing and franking letters for posting, archiving, filing
Front office - to meet and greet potential clients who come into the office and register their details on the system for sale or let. Print and hand out brochures to applicants visiting the office
Take part in the morning sales meetings and diary management for the day
Adhere to company policies and procedures and use of company systems on the pc and paper forms including any requirements for money laundering and GDPR
Ideally, the successful candidate will hold a full UK driving licence and have access to their own vehicle, due to the nature of the role where you will have to conduct viewings
However, we are happy to consider someone close to achieving their full licence and can purchase a vehicle
